John Charmley is a historian of some reputation who, on his own rather smug account, underwent a sort of road-to-Damascus conversion over prewar British appeasement of Hitler. On reading the archives, he seems to have convinced himself that such a policy was not bad at all. Appeasement was not only possible to continue but would have been far better than what he portrays as Churchill's obsequiousness toward the Americans. In his view, a British accommodation with Hitler would have been not just desirable but a sine qua non if the United Kingdom wished to remain a "great power."
