The varied and industrious career of Howard Norman--as traveler, folklorist, translator, teacher, and novelist--hearkens back to a time when writers were more active participants in the worlds they surveyed. It also effectively distinguishes him from the hordes of his contemporaries securely housed in academic sinecures.
Norman's home bases are the University of Maryland, where he teaches in the graduate writing program, and East Calais in northern Vermont, where he lives with his wife, the poet Jane Shore, and their six-year-old daughter.
