CELEBRATION IN THE NORTHWEST
Ana Maria Matute, translated by Phoebe Ann Porter
Lincoln and London: University of Nebraska Press, 1997
84 pp., $12.00
Celebration in the Northwest, originally published in 1953 as Fiesta al noroeste in Barcelona, and recipient of the 1952 Café Gijon Prize, is one of Ana Maria Matute's most poignant works. Recognized by many as one of the major female novelists of the twentieth century, Matute is the third woman to have been elected to the Spanish Royal Academy of the Language and, at present, after the passing of Carmen Condé and Elena Quiroga, its only female member.
Celebration in the Northwest, rendered beautifully into English by Phoebe Ann Porter, is a powerful work that reflects the love/hate relationship between half brothers, ...
. . .
...annies, cooks, and writers such as Andersen, Grimm, and Perrault. In that work, she takes her readers on a quest for identity and greater understanding of others.
Phoebe Ann Porter should be thanked for her excellent translation of Celebration in the Northwest. It has allowed non-Spanish-speaking readers to come to know better the talent of one of the most outstanding writers of our time.
