The late Toni Cade Bambara was ever a fighter, and before her heroic battle with cancer ended in 1995, she won her parallel struggle to finish a draft of what she hoped would be her magnum opus. Those Bones Are Not My Child is an exhaustively researched but fictional treatment of the Atlanta child murders of the late 1970s and early '80s, a traumatic era she experienced firsthand as an Atlanta activist and educator. The book opens on July 20, 1980, when Sonny Spencer, a twelve-year-old black boy, suddenly disappears. ...prominence, and although Bambara's earlier work The Salt Eaters has an enthusiastic critical following, the novel is difficult, experimental, and definitely an acquired taste. Perhaps now, in her magnificent call for justice for the dead and missing children of Atlanta, Bambara will achieve just consideration herself, as a magnificently poetic, fiery, yet healing narrator of the human spirit.
