As part of my research for an upcoming book on the plight of African authors, I sent numerous writers a questionnaire about their publishing experiences; Tadjo's responses demonstrate that the continent's Francophone writers share the difficulties of its authors who write in English. When asked to describe her career as a writer, she indicates that she was successful particularly at the beginning, but that frustrations of the market have intervened in recent years. She is not the first to admit that writers in many countries--particularly in England and the United States--can often relate negative stories about publishing.
Laterite, her first volume of poems, was published in 1983, largely because she had entered a literary competition and won first prize (Prix de l'Agence de Cooperation Culturelle et Technique).
