If you don't count the dissertation that Chuck Frazier wrote to finish up his Ph.D., then Cold Mountain is his second book. His first was a travel guide published by the Sierra Club in 1985. Although he wrote this book fairly quickly--over a span of two years including two summers spent hiking in the mountains of Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia--Chuck had actually been planning the trip since he was nine years old, when he saw a television program about Machu Picchu. I'm not sure when he started reading travel guides for pleasure, but by the time he wrote the proposal for his travel book, he had read every book written about South America. Even Conrad's Nostromo.
With no difficulty, Chuck was able to convince the Sierra Club editors that he knew exactly which Andean trails had not been hike...

...together in the right proportions. It also requires, however, that the traveler, the writer, and the reader pay attention. If grace is preparation, then receptivity is the guide in the rubber boots. Whether the expedition takes place in one of his books or in some external geographical reality, Chuck Frazier is an artist where itinerary is concerned and a Sherpa where literature is concerned.
