THE ANGEL OF DARKNESS
Caleb Carr
New York: Random House, 1997
629 pp., $25.95

Readers who exulted in Caleb Carr's last book, The Alienist, will find a familiar cast of characters (and many, many reminders of Carr's previous plot) in The Angel of Darkness. Once again, we find the psychologist Dr. Laszlo Kreizler and his loyal entourage confronting crime and solving it with aplomb. Once again, such historical figures as Theodore Roosevelt, suffragist Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Clarence Darrow stride into the story; once again, Carr has delivered an old-fashioned page-turner worthy of Dickens, perhaps, or certainly of Arthur Conan Doyle.

The year is 1897, and the United States and Spain are perilously close to war. Hearst is inflaming anti-Spanish passions in his news...

. . .

...hat many unanswered questions will haunt Kreizler as he moves on to other cases. How much, indeed, do his own needs serve as motivation for his unflagging investigations? To what extent can anyone bury the pain of his past? To what extent are human beings capable of change? Readers, of course, are likely to have a question of their own: When will Kreizler return with another suspenseful case?
