When Andrea Barrett won the 1996 National Book Award for Ship Fever and Other Stories, more than a few eyebrows were raised. Who was this Andrea Barrett, now placed in the company of writers like John Updike (a 1982 winner) and Philip Roth (1995)? Short story collections are rarely given an NBA nod; in this genre, Barrett was joining the stellar ranks of Katherine Anne Porter (who won in 1966) and Flannery O'Connor (1972).
Barrett had published four novels in rapid succession during the eight years preceding Ship Fever: Lucid Stars (1988), Secret Harmonies (1989), The Middle Kingdom (1991), and Forms of Water (1993)--contemporary domestic fictions that earned her critical comparisons with the work of Gail Godwin, Anne Tyler, and Sue Miller.
