Louise Erdrich fancy-danced her way onto the best-seller lists back in 1984 with Love Medicine, the first volume in what, with the publication of The Bingo Palace, has become a Native American quartet. Coming from an artist with such extraordinary talents, this fourth part of the quartet is disappointing. Readers who prefer fiction that challenges, that reverberates with possibilities long after the last word is read, will undoubtedly hope for another, more serious, attempt. vbcrlf
