Galicia, the northwestern corner of the Iberian Peninsula--green, lush, and misty--has mothered many tales, myths, and storytellers. The coast is rough, and its villages hide from the Atlantic at the end of deep and narrow bays. On the coastal cliffs, widows watch for the shipwrecked. The interior is mountainous and wooded, inhabited by men, monks, cattle, and witches. I do not believe in the witches, but I know where they are.
Galicia is Celtic, and the barbaric Vandals came and left. Galicia became barely Roman, but prefects and centurions reveled in the riches, even gold, that the genies of the underground, when suitably cajoled, led them to discover.
