If fresh talent is as thrilling to witness in literature as it is in sports, then reading Castle Freeman Jr.'s Judgment Hill must be almost as rousing as what baseball fans felt while watching Jackie Robinson's first games in a Dodger uniform. First novel though it is, the writing aptitude that brought these words onto the page is mature and of a very high order:
"Marvin caught the bale Hugh tossed up and set it in its place on the load. He built the load carefully, thoughtfully, the way you build a brick wall--a brick wall without mortar. There was an art to the laying in of the bales so the load would mount to its full height and still remain stable of its own weight, even when it was rolling down from the field over the bumpy woods track. A good man could build a load of bales a mile up, if a thrower could be found to toss that high."

...d of ingenuity possessed by Mr. Townsend Higginbotham Guest, the weather vane thief. Shrewdness is freely available to both sides of any conflict--and it's certainly possessed in plenty by this gifted novelist. Castle Freeman Jr. will be heard from in the years to come, and readers of Judgment Hill will be eagerly listening for his voice. I, for one, hope he realizes how much he's got to say.
