At a time when Saudi bashing seems to be Washington pundits' favorite extracurricular activity, Stephen Schwartz's new book, The Two Faces of Islam: The House of Sa'ud From Tradition to Terror, adds considerable fuel to the fire. Schwartz's thesis is simple yet provocative: the misbegotten union between the House of Sa'ud and Wahhabi Islam created a radicalized theology that has desecrated the essence of Islam and sanctified terrorism and discord throughout the Muslim world. Though Schwartz offers a powerful indictment, his tendency toward polemics and incessant exaggerations obscures the power of his argument and the utility of his condemnation.

...There is much in this book that is noteworthy, and certainly Saudi behavior merits careful dissection and criticism. Too often, though, Schwartz damages his case by indulging his grievances and treating complex issues in a facile, even irresponsible, manner. Such defects ought not deter readers from this book but should warn them that what they will encounter is an unbalanced, polemical narrative.
