We can point with reasonable accuracy to the time when the literature of our northern neighbor began to really matter to American readers. The appearance here in 1971 of Robertson Davies' irresistibly plummy neo-Dickensian novel Fifth Business focused attention on a fictional tradition that had previously seemed rudimentary, if not inchoate (partial exceptions being the comic fiction of Mordecai Richler and the critically praised work of Margaret Laurence and Quebec's Marie-Clair Blais).

One thinks of David Copperfield and Great Expectations while delightedly lost in the crowded pages of the engrossing, incomparably funny, and deeply affecting story. In any case, it seems reasonable to say that a practically perfect confluence of writer and subject has here produced not just any old book of the year, but very probably one for the ages.
