If W.H. Auden in "New Year Letter" labels Rainer Maria Rilke "the Santa Claus of loneliness," he might well have called Elisabeth Kübler-Ross the patron saint of death. In Kübler-Ross' newest and (according to her) final book, the title extends her studies to an even more profound level: The Wheel of Life: A Memoir of Living and Dying. As she says in chapter 1, "If not for death, would we appreciate life?" In a study of her childhood, medical studies, work with the dying, and writing, she gives her readers a "hail and farewell" to a life usefully lived and about to be gracefully left. ...n only be grateful that she has shared those events that developed her philosophically and spiritually. Despite my demurrers about the negative undertones and her "channel surfing," this flawed work is worth reading. Some readers will be able to make a leap of faith in those areas many of us find difficult. I guess what we have to do, Dr. Kübler-Ross, is to learn to love you--unconditionally.
