The celebration, which regularly draws participants from twenty states and Canada and culminates in a polka Mass celebrated by Edward Pevec, Cleveland's Slovene-American auxiliary bishop, is a symbol of the Slovene Americans' prominence in northern Ohio. In fact, Slovene Americans are among the tightest knit and best organized of the more than fifty ethnic groups in the Cleveland area. The estimated 100,000 Americans of Slovene descent living in metropolitan Cleveland congregate in three Catholic nationality parishes, nine National Homes that serve as centers of community activity, and over two hundred organizations. Perhaps the admonition Florence Unetich, the daughter of Slovenian immigrants, received from her mother sums it up best: "Ponosna bodita da sta Slovenca": Be proud of your Slovenian heritage.
