More than two million Muslims (immigrants from North Africa and their descendants) have made France their home. But--even years after memories of life in their homelands have faded--many of these newcomers still feel like outsiders. Even those born in the host country may acknowledge a tough time finding acceptance in French society. Many feel they have been tainted by the broad brush of the media, which frequently portrays Arabs as criminals or terrorists.

Mohamed Ben Salah, for example, has an advanced degree in management and a good job in downtown Paris. But he admits that to a large number of French people, he will always simply be "an Arab," distinguished primarily by the ethnic stereotypes of dark, curly hair, prominent nose, and thick lips.
