Ken Seymour

Publication: The world & I online
Issue Date: 1/1/2002
Size: 386 Words, 2,122 Characters

Ken Seymour grew up poor in South Carolina. He went to school barefoot and didn't have the 25 cents a week needed for lunches. At age 14 he "knew I had to get away from home." Later, he realized he had been destined for jail or worse, like the older boys he knew. ...

. . .

...started to register him, but when he gave his age, they said, "You're too young," adding, "You can't get reclassified until you're old enough to register for the draft. ... Come back when you're older."

By the time he was 18, Seymour was in the Army. "Matter of fact," he says, "I never registered for the draft." He did, though, retire as a major after 38 years of service.--P.S.
