Creglingen lies on the border between these two historic regions in Germany's Tauber valley. Chuckling, I took another sip from my glass of local white wine, hoping to ease the suspected discomfort of sleeping overnight in Stahl's hayloft. Like most European farmers, the Stahls are facing strict EU regulations and a stagnant market. Their solution has been to turn their farmhouse attic into a heuhotel (hay hotel). They offer travelers dinner and breakfast, bedding, and a spot in the hay for only 30 deutsche marks. It's not the Ritz-Carlton, but the family's hospitality knows no bounds.
For a city dweller, the 300-year-old farm surpasses all notions of quaintness. My first glimpse could have been a postcard: grandmother and grandfather, round and jolly looking, sat on the porch watching...

..., bringing together nations and cultures, forcing them to confront their differences. Profit motive aside, projects such as Youthcamp and Expo 2000 are fostering a dialogue between these peoples.They are doing it with the understanding that, especially in our shrinking world, harmony with nature will be impossible if there is no harmony among ourselves. Yes, Germany's goals are lofty indeed.
