In recent years the celebration has become a tourist attraction, but this does not diminish its religious importance. The service in St. Nicholas' Cathedral lasts from eight in the morning until noon and is conducted by Archbishop Iakovos, the primate of North America (or a distinguished visiting bishop in his stead), assisted by the resident priest. Following the liturgy, clergy and congregation assemble around a marble kiosk in the cathedral courtyard. There the crowd watches as the priest makes the sign of the cross over a symbolic bowl of water. He leads the group in praying for calm seas, the safety of sailors, and blessings upon the faithful.
