When pressed, the genial, 64-year-old rabbi admits that some Karaite families in Israel, pestered by their children, do in fact light menorah candles for the holiday. "Just as some American Jewish families--faced by a parallel 'December dilemma'--place Christmas trees in their homes," he explains.
Dabah also alludes to a "mezuzah compromise." Karaites do not traditionally place a mezuzah (a small parchment scroll inscribed with the passages from Deuteronomy 6:4--9 and 11:13--21) on their doorposts (as do most Jews). Instead, they put up a little plaque with the Ten Commandments. "But here in Israel," Dabah adds with a wry smile, "many of us, anxious to make our rabbinate [mainstream Jewish] visitors feel welcome, place a mezuzah there as well."
