Around the world, more than one billion Muslims join in this annual expression of joy and thanksgiving. Eid al-Fitr celebrates Muslims' happiness at completing Ramadan, the holy month of fasting. It is an occasion of hope for a new life and abundant blessings. Customs vary from city to city and country to country, but the day universally begins with Eid prayers, which start before sunrise in musallas or mosques. Eid al-Fitr is a communal expression and affirmation of shared values and commitments.

In so doing, we may come to understand that another culture's way of doing things is merely another path to a common human goal, which is to attain happiness and peace of mind in this world and beyond.
