The Grand Cemetery is one of the liveliest places in the grungy downtown of Haiti's crowded capital, Port-au-Prince. The necropolis echoes to the hymns and wailing of mourners, accompanied by the percussive sounds of improvised bands, as the dead enter their "pretty" new homes.
The above-ground sepulchers are jauntily painted or tiled and decorated with tin wreaths; many are embossed with photos of those laid to rest. But their rest is not eternal. Constricted cemetery real estate and the pressing needs of new corpses mean that old bones are pushed out the rear of the tombs and into a central ossuary, where they mingle with the bones of the other nameless dead.
