They played for teams like the Pittsburgh Crawfords, the Birmingham Black Barons, the Cleveland Buckeyes, and the Chicago American Giants. In a sport renowned for nicknames, they sported some of the best: Cool Papa, Smokey Joe, Big Mitt, Highpockets, Double Duty. It is said they were good enough--but not white enough--to play in the major leagues. Indeed, the players in the Negro leagues were among the greatest the game has ever seen.
