Twenty years later, Steinbeck bought a pickup truck and returned to the roads of America with his dog, Charley. It was 1960, and the first generation of travel centers had been spawned by the Interstate Highway Act of 1956. When he required gasoline, Steinbeck would circle to the rear of the complex, where the big trucks fueled. As the journey unfolded, he reacquainted himself with truck drivers. Travels With Charley, the book that followed, contained this passage: "They are a breed set apart from the life around them, the long-distance truckers. They are clannish and they stick together, speaking a specialized language. By listening to them talk I accumulated a vocabulary of the road." FOOTNOTE: *

He studied them, talked to them, rode beside them, and then, having described them as best he could, concluded, "I learned only enough about these men to be sure I would like to know much more."n FOOTNOTE: FOOTNOTE: *For more about John Steinbeck, read "You Can Go Home Again," p. 150.
