The two days of festivities are little known outside the country, and few Colombians from outside the area attend. Many are reluctant to share in the Pastusos' exuberant celebration. The festivities are marked by the smearing of shoe polish on January 5, known as the Day of the Blacks, and the flinging of talcum powder on January 6, the Day of the Whites. Although the Pasto carnival is now associated with Epiphany, it originates in native hunting and farming celebrations that predate the Spanish conquest. The Pasto and Quillacinga tribes once propitiated the Sun and Moon in a lavishly costumed festival that included much music and dancing. Perhaps it is only an accident that I experience the two days differently, but I believe the racial overtones are related to older, deeper meanings. Like their pre-Columbian ancestors, people see their celebration as marking the symbolic difference between night and day, dark and light, evil and good.
