... they occupied separate quarters. While some farmed, generally Jews performed market-based tasks such as plastering, tailoring, weaving, or silversmithing--skills for which they were renowned. In the first part of the twentieth century, some Jews moved to Palestine. An estimated 50,000 immigrated to Israel in 1948. Of the 10,000 who chose to stay, only an estimated 400 remain today.
