First Amendment: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech."
But the issue wasn't resolved at the school board level, so the parents and their high school children filed suit against the Santa Fe Independent School Board (SFISB) in federal district court. Because of threats of "physical intimidation or violence centered around events at public schools," the parents and children were allowed to proceed anonymously as "Jane Doe." Hence the title of the case:Santa Fe Independent School District v. Jane Doe et al. In court, the "Does" claimed that ...

... if so, for the State to classify [it].'"
Are student invocations written and delivered solely by students protected by the free speech clause of the First Amendment? Or must these invocations be reviewed by state school officials to assure they aren't really prayers in disguise that violate the establishment clause of the First Amendment? The Supreme Court will hear this case this spring.
