The future of Afghanistan is uncertain as it confronts some of its most difficult challenges. The Taliban, bolstered by the quagmire in Iraq, have successfully regrouped and engaged in bloody attacks against Western troops. The Karzai government is plagued by corruption, lack of economic growth, and military weakness. Many Afghans refer to President Hamid Karzai as the mayor of Kabul because that’s about the extent of his influence.
