Early release days, such as Wednesdays in the Kansas City, Kansas school district, offer students time to get caught up on homework--but the free afternoon could also give some children the opportunity for trouble to find them.
The answer? Fine arts programs.
Community Housing of Wyandotte County, Kansas, better known as CHWC, used a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Justice in 2006 to fund the CSI (Community Safety Initiative) Youth Program.
CHWC is better known in the urban core of Kansas City, Kansas for rehabbing blighted homes, as well as building new homes where most private developers will not build. The result has been a stabilization of neighborhoods and people taking more pride in their homes.
So perhaps it was a natural extension for the non-profit organizat...
