It's a far cry from fabled Persia, land of Silk Road merchants, Omar Khayyám, and illustrious dynasties spanning almost three millennia.

Evidence of discontent is widespread in Iran--not only due to the economy but also because of the brutal arrogance of the army and secret police.

A routine drama that took place not long ago on the outskirts of Zahedan, near Iran's eastern border, illustrates the human-rights crisis. Four bearded soldiers in olive-green fatigues, cradling submachine guns, waved at a Pakyan sedan, which pulled to a halt. Two men were roughly hauled from the four-door vehicle. The soldiers screamed at the men, and one of them fired a round from a pistol, whipped the driver across the head, and then forced him to the ground and searched him.

"The rail line is not going to help Iran's economy very much," he said. "The gas pipeline deal with Turkey is important, but I predict America will try and prevent this from taking place.

"Iran will continue to go downhill economically and finally collapse in the same way that the Soviet Union did. The only question is whether the end will come in 10 or 20 years."
