Latin America's political pendulum has swung firmly to the left, and there's little evidence it will swing back soon. Seven of the region's eight most populous nations held presidential elections this year, resulting in a dramatic shift to the left in a part of the world that only a decade ago was a bastion of authoritarian conservatism.
The reelection on Dec. 3 of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez highlights the trend. Chavez, notorious for calling President Bush "the devil" at the U.N., is a direct challenge to the region's increasingly marginalized pro-market conservatives.

...e leaders, such as Ms Bachelet and Argentina's Nestor Kirchner who faces reelection in 2007 can hardly put a dent in Chavez's self-proclaimed "Bolivarian revolution" he dreams of spreading across the hemisphere.
Focused on the quagmire in Iraq, the United States risks finally waking up to find a back yard full of hostile troublemakers.
