Florida recently renewed its struggle to create a $300 million statewide pre-kindergarten program, and a recent flurry of surveys show it will be pricey but worth it.
A widely publicized thirty-six-year study conducted in Ypsilanti, Michigan, shows that for every dollar spent on preschool programs, society will gain $17. Oklahoma started a universal pre-K program six years ago, and a recent study at Georgetown University said it has produced "extremely impressive results." Another survey by the National Institute for Early Education Research confirms what educators and policymakers already knew: Pre-kindergarten programs are expensive.

Money matters would be handled during the regular session beginning in March. "I am cautiously optimistic that the legislature this time will do well by quality. Unless you have quality, you have nothing," Lawrence said.
