One such case is that the American black community is monolithic. This myth is based on appearances and mistaken assumptions, not on reality. Believe it or not, blacks don't all think alike, but the perception exists that they do. For instance, it is sincerely believed that all blacks oppose welfare reform and support affirmative action. That's simply not true. No one believes that all whites, all Latinos, or all Asians think the same way on every issue, so why does this outright falsehood about the black community go unchallenged?

...on of just how intensely the war is being waged over people's minds.
What is unmistakable from all this is that hot air and venomous rhetoric will not solve the urgent problems that all of us, black and white, recognize must be addressed. All we ask is for more rational and reasonable discourse to point us in the right direction we need to go as a country. What is so threatening about that?
