The United Nations has confronted harsh criticism for the past two years, especially for its peacekeeping operations. Current initiatives in the U.S. Congress highlight the depth of dissatisfaction with the international organization.
House Resolution 7, passed in February, and a similar Senate bill sponsored by Majority Leader Robert Dole would restrict the president's authority to deploy U.S. troops as part of UN peace operations and sharply reduce U.S. financial support for the world organization. In its current form, the legislation would cripple the United Nations. As the world's most powerful state and the UN's major financial contributor, the United States is critical for the effective functioning of the world body.
