I certainly don't go along with many Republican leaders today who dismiss the very idea that government should try to help the jobless, the sick, the homeless. Such sweeping skepticism is the luxury of those who have never stood in an unemployment line or slept in a public shelter. I could show them some towns and cities in Pennsylvania that would hardly have survived the last 20 years without the help of their government. I could introduce them to people who today would be jobless, o...

...000 kids into loving homes each year for a decade. Better still, maybe we should imagine that we ourselves were among those thousands of children today in need of a break, yearning for the love of a mother and father. From that angle, the problem doesn't seem so abstract or hopeless. From that angle, who can scoff at the idea that, with a little compassion, government really can help people?
