The day after tomorrow, we may encounter still bolder technologies. Imagine the following:
* Having lifelike holograms of the Royal Ballet dancing in your living room, or touching the fluff on The Lion King, Part II in, say, the year 2005.
* Racing in the Indianapolis 500 at speeds exceeding 200 MPH, with the feel of the car beneath you and the surge of competitors at your elbow.
* Or--for a change--shrinking to the size of a poppy seed and coursing through your own 3--D, audiovisually computer-simulated bloodstream ...
* If your pleasures are simpler, imagine all 155 degrees of your vertical vision and all 185 degrees of your horizontal vision consumed by alpine meadows, the wafting of a light breeze o...
. . .
...Good.
Most of all, we must treasure those experiences that can never be simulated--in a word, life itself. At day's end, media are still media, and virtual reality will ever be only virtual. A warm little hand gripping yours tightly as you make your way into the sunshine is real, and a wonderful day in the ballpark with your son is still, yes, a wonderful day in the ballpark with your son.
