Cuba is likely to remain a communist dictatorship after the demise of President Fidel Castro, who has been showing evidence of physical frailty.
The island nation may, however, evolve according to the post-Mao Chinese model, increasing in economic freedom while staying politically authoritarian.
Opposition and dissident groups have been growing recently, but their power is insignificant.
If Raśl Castro outlives his brother, he would no doubt succeed Fidel but would likely establish a collective leadership.
The post-Fidel leadership faces huge problems, including resurrecting a devastated economy, rebuilding infrastructure, resolving the role of the powerful military, handling rising racism, and dealing with pressure among younger Cubans to immigrate to the United States.
