Today, Israeli security organizations are receiving vital help in responding to that threat from the unlikeliest of places: the leadership ranks of their former enemy, the PLO.
A high-ranking Israeli military source goes so far as to say that Yasser Arafat, the veteran PLO leader who has helped put many Israelis into early graves, is, ironically, now the key player in thwarting anti-Israeli terrorism--at least attacks launched from the Gaza Strip and West Bank population centers that are now under the PLO's control.

In the future, other Israelis and Palestinians may not be so fortunate. But, as veteran Middle East watchers have observed, no matter how carefully or cooperatively both sides work to keep the terrorists in check, nobody can ultimately stop them militarily. A permanent solution can only be brought about politically. And in the Middle East, politics is a dangerous and unpredictable game.
