It was foretold even while he was in his mother's womb that Wallace Deen Mohammed would succeed his father, Elijah Muhammad, as leader of the Nation of Islam, otherwise known as the Black Muslims.
His devotion to his father--even to the extent of accepting a three-year jail term as the price of obeying what he perceived to be his father's wish--cemented his hold on the succession to the group's leadership. But behind his reverence for his father was an independence of mind and heart that caused him to go on a quest for truth and ultimately reject the elder man's fiercely racist dogmas.
