Modern cities, most with grand harbors--cosmopolitan places of unique charm and ambiance--these are the intriguing cities of Australia. However, when Americans think of Australia it is usually not of these, but of the Outback, that vast frontier characterized by Crocodile Dundee, sometimes called the "Never-Never Land" (an Australian movie bears this name).
The Outback fills Australia's middle, centering on a large red rock where the sun climbs, clawing its way across the forever-sky. Dry and hot, it differs vastly from Australia's coastal regions where idyllic coves and stretches of sand and rock beaches add charm to its busy cities.
