The steep snow slope, rising from the cedar-clad saddle, was deep in early morning shade as we toiled toward its foot. Once on it our boots made little impression on the icy surface as we began to zigzag slowly upwards.
Roped together, we were glad of the ice-axes which would arrest our fall should we slip and begin to slither toward the scree below. It was bitterly cold, but the exertion of forcing our way up in the thin air soon had us sweating. In places my partner, Lem, struggled to keep her footing as her boots lacked the rigidity to kick into the frozen snow, and I was forced to hack out rudimentary steps with my ice-axe.
It took an hour to conquer the treacherous slope. Emerging into blinding sunshine on the undulating upper reaches of 2,365-meter-high Mt. Tahtali, we stoppe...

...d way. Maybe I’ll enjoy a well-earned meal in the restaurant surrounded by day-trippers from Russia, Germany, the UK and Holland. Perhaps I’ll think back to old times when I squatted in the lee of the summit cairn, munching on a few olives, admiring the view and basking in the glow of another successful summit attempt. Maybe, just maybe, then I’ll be able to give the answer.
