Fathers win when they actively father. There is a deep sense of satisfaction that pervades a father's life when he becomes an involved dad. Vice President Al Gore spoke to this point recently when he said, "There is nothing more noble than to see a father succeed." Bravo! I couldn't agree more.
As a researcher over the past seven years, I have tapped into the experiences of some seven thousand fathers across the nation. These dads come from a range of experiences: fathers in prison, fathers in the military, stepfathers, divorced dads, inner-city fathers, suburban fathers, and fathers from different ethnic backgrounds. Each group faces some unique challenges.
