Peace had quickly fled from Shalom's life.In April, her mother had passed away after a wrenching bout with cancer. Three weeks later, Shalom checked herself into the emergency room of a Washington, D.C., hospital, forced there by what she thought were the painful side effects brought about by the lingering stress of losing a loved one. The doctor dutifully noted the symptoms: nausea, fatigue, an inability to sleep well. After running some tests, the doctor came back, a colleague in tow, to break the news: Shalom was pregnant.
All the angst of the last few weeks poured out. "What did I do to deserve all this?" she despaired.
Then matters went downhill. When she told the father about her pregnancy, he refused to have anything to do with the child. Money became tight. Toward the end of ...

...to deal with the other problems." The Hynishes, Pat Palchak, and the Gabriel Project are filling the void left by the passing of her mother. "They are doing what she'd be doing if she were here," says Shalom.
Now, as her due date approaches, peace is returning. The fear and uncertainty are gone, or at least diminished. "There's light at the end of this tunnel," she says. "So far, so good."
