A boastful man by the name of Mangonel was our guest recently. He brought us a gift of a cache of lampreys which he had purchased in La Rochelle. Fortunately, I do not eat these slithery creatures as they cause a hideous rash. The servants of the estate did partake, however, and soon were victims of the dreaded 'downward purge.' Physicians were called and administered their cures. M. Mangonel saved me the trouble of encouraging him to leave: He was gone before light of day. One wonders from what waters these tainted lampreys really came.
