Greece, an Odyssey Worth the Wait

“Are you going to Greece this summer?”

Every year around mid-winter, the members of my extended Greek family begin posing this question to each other. The answer is supposed to be a resounding “yes.” Like a lot of Greeks living in America, many of my relatives vacation in Greece every summer, and some make several trips a year. This is their way of paying homage to a noble heritage, living life to the fullest--and simply doing what’s right.

Being married to a non-Greek does not relieve one from the subtle pressure to abide by this ethic. Nor does having young children, having a child whose dietary needs pose a challenge, having a limited budget, or even having other travel plans.

Nonetheless, after my last trip in 1994, I took more than a decade-long hiatus from visiting Greece, ...

...his is truly a country that satisfies both spiritual and secular passions.

As we landed in Washington Dulles airport, I was happy to be home to American comforts and grateful for having revisited the quirks and splendors of my ancestral homeland. I was pleased, most of all, in knowing that my sons were amazed at all they had witnessed. This truly had been an odyssey that was worth the wait.
