At the center of Santo Domingo's peaceful Parque Colon looms a bronze effigy of Christopher Columbus. The great explorer clutches an anchor in one hand and points westward to beckoning lands with the other. A comely young Indian woman balances on steps beneath Columbus' feet. Quill in hand, she deftly inscribes the name "Don Cristobal Colon" onto the monument's base. Christopher Columbus' infatuation with Hispaniola--known as Quisqueya by its original inhabitants--began on his first voyage in 1492. The admiral was so taken with this idyllic Caribbean isle that he renamed it La Isla Espanola, or "Spanish Island," and confided in his logbook, "In all Castile there is no land to be compared to this in beauty and fertility."

...re living proof that despite all the bad press Columbus has received, his exploits were not all in vain. Feeling the weight of history lift from my shoulders, I take a seat outside a café facing Parque Colon and order a cold limonada. I gaze out across the shady square at the statue of Christopher Columbus and the Spanish cathedral where my journey began, seeing them as if for the first time.
