Joana is hit with the irony that less than one week ago this same group of students lived in a country club ambience, blissfully unaware of life on the margins of society. As preparatory students at the Culver Military Academy in the Indiana heartland of America, their days were full of studies, equestrian lessons, ice hockey practice, choir meetings, theater practice, soft beds in warm rooms at night, and the certainty of three large meals served up daily in the school dining hall.
She thinks back to a time when at the age of eight...

...who has 'made it,' I cannot rest knowing that children are hungry, old people shoeless, that so many continue to suffer."
At the end of seven days the group of twelve teens are taking home far more than they gave. Their minds are full--full of new understanding and new questions about old assumptions.These days, thanks to Joana Orellan Watson, Santa Claus visits Calnali on a regular basis.
