At 10,000 feet, our trail is blocked by a lone, temperamental Cape buffalo bull. My guide Francis Kamotho, three porters, and I freeze in our tracks, anticipating a charge. The rogue buffalo glares back as we make our way off the trail and into the bamboo thickets to avoid a lethal confrontation. It doesn't seem the proper place to argue with a buffalo; besides, it lives here, and I'm only a visitor on Mount Kenya.
Before my encounter with the old bull and my attempt at Mount Kenya, I had to navigate the hectic streets of Nairobi. Earlier that week, while standing in the rain, waiting for my ride to the mountain's base and watching people avoid the potholes, I had promised myself that the torrential downpour wouldn't stop my quest to reach the summit.

... bag. After a week on and around the main peaks, I feel like staying longer. Many hikers hurry to the top without looking around them. Mount Kenya has a lot more to offer than a summit. The flora and fauna are superb, and the views of the peaks and valleys will leave hikers awestruck. Part of me wants to keep exploring, but the other half is beckoning me toward the first available hot shower.
