How does one come to be chosen to be an ambassador for the United States? Hollywood movies might lead us to think it is a glamorous position, appointed on the basis of wealth and favors. Evelyn (Evie) Teegen, an Iowa farm girl who was named U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Fiji and three other nations in the South Pacific during the George Bush administration, is an outstanding example of what it is really all about. Teegen's life has been devoted to volunteering in her community, and volunteerism is what taught her many of the skills that led to her appointment.

"Most people don't have a clue as to what an ambassador does--the responsibilities, the daily contacts, the challenges," says Evie. "It certainly isn't a matter of just throwing parties!
