Unlike virtually everyone else in the country, I was not plugged into the television that Tuesday morning. Instead, I was writing poetry in my office. It was going well so I let my pencil carry me forward, deep into the morning. When I finally emerged for lunch—a quickie sandwich, maybe some pretzels—everyone was sluggish and no one smiled. It was spooky, it woke up my nerves. I finally joined the rest of the country in its zombied shock when I got into my car and turned on the radio. It happened as I pulled onto the highway and vaguely wondered where all the other cars were. When I heard the news, I gripped the steering wheel, I looked at the soaring height of the IDS Tower on the Minneapolis skyline and I imagined it coming down. Then I imagined another IDS Tower crashing down. I imagine...
. . .
...will rise in my imagination. They will be dressed flamboyantly and they will have strong arms. This mighty casteller will reach into the sky and, at the very top, a young boy will stand up with his fingers extended. The crowd below will applaud. Then, even as I see this, there will be an airplane, and this delicate skyscraper of human bodies will fall, one after another, into the rising smoke.
